Tutorial Eight: Embedding flickr badges to your blog

Below is an instructional video to embed flickr badges to your blog

Tutorial Eight: Embedding youtube video onto your blog

Below is instructions to embed a youtube video to your blog.

Tutorial Seven: Assistive Technology

In tute seven we were introduced to assitive technology used in Occupational Therapy. We had two guest speakers from Wellington Kimiora School and Star education to talk to us.

Assistive technology is Any item, piece of equipment, or system, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals (Cook & Hussey, 2002)

We were introduced to the assistive technology trackerpro. The trackerp is a mouse replacement device thast enables people with little or no hand movement to perform all mouse functions by moving their head.Plug Tracker Pro works by plugging the mouse/USB port (instead of a mouse) and mount it on top of a computer screen, laptop, or augmentative communication device. Tracker Pro’s high-resolution intelligent camera – in a solid aluminum enclosure – then tracks a tiny reflective dot worn on your forehead or glasses. When you move your head, Tracker Pro elegantly converts that into computer mouse movement, and you move your mouse cursor. Clicking can be accomplished by using ability switches

As explained above, the trackerpro allows a person with limited or no hand movements can use a computer using the trackerpro to click and move the mouse on the computer.

Tutorial Six: The internet and Online Communities

Tutorial six investigates online comunities, I will be looking at the online community face book.

Facebook is a free-access social networking website that is operated and privately owned by Facebook. Users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region to connect and interact with other people. People can also add friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves.

The services facebook provide a profile page for each user, where suers can display a profile picture, users can post information about themselves, what they ahve been doing or thinkings. Users can add friends and look at their profile pictures and photos and videos aswell. People can send private messages that no one else can read, or public wall to wall messages that can be displayed on the home page and anyone can read. Users can also play games, do quizzes and faciiate with the programme skype (where people can communicate like talking on a phone using the computers microphones and cameras).

The type of topics discussed are predominantly to do with social activities such as what people do in the weekend, where they are living, how they are, what they are doing. People upload photos and videos to inform people of what they are doing in the weekend!!

As any photos can be uploaded on facebook albums ethical issues with people putting photos up without permission, or photos that may have been taken without people knowing. People can log into other peoples accounts and privacy issues such as people adding you as a friend and looking at their profile and pictures.

Facebook however, has many benefits being an online community such as allows for people to communicate with family and friends, displays photos and videos and allows
It also allows people an opportunity to chat and make connections with common interests. Also allows for social networks such as re-connections with old school friends.

Online communities lack compared to tradtional comunities becasue there is no face to face talking, people can misread what has been written, only people who use the internet can be apart of the online community.

Tutorial Four and Five: Video production sessions

YouTube is a video sharing website on which users can upload and share videos. Videos can be uploaded and shared from all over the world, which makes it excellent to share videos with friends and family dispersed around the world. Youtube provides entertaining videos, where people can express their unfound talents, skits, plays, adentures ANYTHING they want really. Viewers can post comments and rate videos.

Our group got together and planned a short 30 second video following a theme to overcome a problem!!!!
Together, we did a little planning using the technique scripting.Scripting is where we got together and brainstormed any ideas we had, it helps to create a theme, storyline and structure to the film.

Storyboarding was also a useful tool when creating our video as it enabled us to plan the shots we would use. It adds structure to the film by drwain the shots in the correect sequence, this makes it much easier when it comes to shooting the film. It also creates flow when filming as the shooting is pre planned and ready to go.

Tutorial Three: Blog Creation Tasks

Todays Tute invloved setting up a google account and a blog.
Blogger is a free blog publishing tool from Google Blogger. A blog can be changed to suit each individual, such as the layout, font, colours and displas can all be edited. You can change each template, add posts, gadgets, videos and photos

Blogs can be used as online journal for people to share their interests, thoughts with their family, friends ot publicly if they wish.

I added the gadget pacman and added posts including the content covered from the previous tutes.

Tutorial Two: Digital Camera use and applications

In this tutorial, we looked at the use of digital cameras.
"A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature." We discussed this quote in reference to digital camera technology and found that there are both positives and negatives with digital camera compared to a film camera. The traditional film camera required an element of surprise when the film was developed and fewer photos were taken, therefore one could say the photos are more meaningful. However, digital cameras have a cost effective way to store photos on the computer and can choose the photos to be developed.

Digital photos can be stored, transferred and manipulated using many free or bought software programmers available. Photos can be manipulated using programmes such as photoshop. Photos can be transferred using iPods, mp3's, memory sticks and emails. Photos can be uploaded and shared with communication programmes such as flicker, face book, bebo and blogger.

With the easy access to photos can be displayed, transferred and stored without people's permission. Due to this ethical issues can arise such as the uncontrolled distribution of photos without people even knowing about it. Once the pictures are on line it is beyond our control and photos can be taken without the subject knowing or they could be manipulated and shared to the public. This presses on ethical considerations regarding the person in the photo and their privacy for once it’s online practically anyone online can view it.
Digital cameras could be used in Occupational therapy as a way to collect data, such as taking pictures of a clients house regarding housing modifications, taking pictures to document group activities, them using adaptive equipment. The use of digital cameras is increasing in Occupational Therapy.
Flickr provides a way for people to upload and share photos and videos either publicly or privately.
Face book offers a similar way to share photos with friends and family.
There is often confusion between digital zoom and optical zoom. Digital zoom is more pixilated when it is zoomed or blown up. Optical zoom is recommended as the quality of the photo remains a lot clearer then digital zoom when it is blown up. To have at least 3 times optical zoom is recommended.

Megapixel refers to the pixels (look like squares) that make up the photo. The more pixels means the better the quality photo. There are 1 million pots of light. 6 or 7 pixels are recommended for good pictures.

Tutorial One: Information and Ethical Issues

Information Technology/Information Communications Technology (IT) is defined as the study or use of systems such as computers and telecommunications for storing, retrieving and sending information. (Compact Oxford English Dictionary. (n.d.). Retrieved from http://www.askoxford.com:80/concise_oed/informationtechnology?view=uk)

Technology is very prevalent in our society and has transformed the way we communicate, where and how we work, shop and learn. ICT has become very common and society is so accustomed and reliant on technology.

I feel very comfortable using technology as it has always integrated into the way I live my life. For example, I can competently use computers to study, communicate with friends and family, organise and listen to music via iPods. However, there are still areas that I am not as competent with as I have never done them before such as this blog.

As Information Technology is integrated more and more into society and becoming a more universal tool it is adapting the way we work.(Bynum, T.W. & Rogerson, S. (2004). Computer ethics and professional responsibility. Oxford Blackwell Publishing). This is evident in Occupational Therapy as therapists embrace the use of IT to communicate with other staff members, clients and their families and ACC funding sites such as ACC via emailing. Clients also have information that is stored and can be accessed on the computer. Therapists rely on cell phones for safety precautions and communications, especially in the community settings. Pagers are used to liaise with therapists and relied on heavily in inpatient hospital settings. Lastly, the traditional telephone and fax machines are also used to communicate with clients and other staff members.

However, because of using IT with communication about clients ethical issues can arise from sharing, capturing and transferring information is via IT devices. As most information liaised with is private ethical issues can arise if the wrong person acquires private or confidential information.
The common terms used are:
-Computer ethics is defined as "a branch of practical philosophy which deals with how computing professionals should make decisions regarding professional and social contact" (Computer Ethics, 2008) retrieved May 6, 2009, form www.wikipedia.org/wiki/computer_ethics

-Intellectual property refers to "creations — including inventions, artistic works, names and designs — that are legally protected. Intellectual property includes patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets."
(Reuters, T. (2004, July 20).Glossary of Patent terms. Retrieved June 04, 2009, from Delphion: http://www.delphion.com/help/glossary#infringement)

-Social justice refers to the "concept of a society in which justice is achieved in every aspect of society, rather than merely a select group" (Social Justice, 2009) retrieved may 6, 2009, from www.wikipedia.org/wiki/social_justice

-Informed consent refers to the "consent by a patient to undergo a medical or surgical treatment or to participate in an experiment after the patient understands the risks involved."
(University of Princeton. (n.d.). Informed consent. Retrieved June 04, 2009, from Wordnet: http://wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=informed%20consent)

I think that having an understanding of the ethical issues surrounding the use of ITC will help us be more aware and responsible with how we use ITC in the workplace. As Occupational Therapists, we are confined to confidentiality and privacy acts so having an awareness of the implications that can arise from the use of ITC can help us protect the confidentiality of the clients we work with.
