Tutorial Seven: Assistive Technology

In tute seven we were introduced to assitive technology used in Occupational Therapy. We had two guest speakers from Wellington Kimiora School and Star education to talk to us.

Assistive technology is Any item, piece of equipment, or system, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals (Cook & Hussey, 2002)

We were introduced to the assistive technology trackerpro. The trackerp is a mouse replacement device thast enables people with little or no hand movement to perform all mouse functions by moving their head.Plug Tracker Pro works by plugging the mouse/USB port (instead of a mouse) and mount it on top of a computer screen, laptop, or augmentative communication device. Tracker Pro’s high-resolution intelligent camera – in a solid aluminum enclosure – then tracks a tiny reflective dot worn on your forehead or glasses. When you move your head, Tracker Pro elegantly converts that into computer mouse movement, and you move your mouse cursor. Clicking can be accomplished by using ability switches

As explained above, the trackerpro allows a person with limited or no hand movements can use a computer using the trackerpro to click and move the mouse on the computer.
